n8n 3.0 Migration: What to Fix Before December
n8n 3.0 beta is out and stable is due in early December. Here is what breaks, how the Migration Report works, and a four-week plan for self-hosted and Cloud teams.
Overview
n8n released version 3.0.0 as a beta on October 27, 2026. The stable 3.x line is planned for early December. This is not a feature dump. Per n8n's own announcement, 3.0 clears legacy paths, tightens security defaults, and changes how self-hosted instances must run.
If you already ship agents and workflows on n8n for UAE ops, the risk is practical: some published workflows will not activate on 3.0 until you replace removed nodes, and npm-based installs will not upgrade at all. The Migration Report inside Settings is the checklist. This note walks through what changes, what to do this month, and where a managed rebuild still makes sense.
Treat 3.0 as a foundation release. Fix the report on 2.x first. Do not jump production to the beta.
What n8n says is changing
From the n8n 3.0 announcement and the breaking changes docs:
- Reliability. Manual executions in queue mode always run on workers. In-memory binary data mode is gone. Default Code node task-runner timeout drops from 5 minutes to 1 minute. Cron and Interval nodes are replaced by the Schedule Trigger.
- Security defaults. Encryption key rotation stays on. Slack credentials need a signing secret. Unverified community packages are off by default. The SSRF block list is larger when protection is enabled.
- Self-hosting. Docker is required.
npmandnpx n8ninstalls are no longer supported, and 3.0 does not publish a runnable n8n package to npm. Kubernetes and Helm setups are not the problem here. - Cleanup. Legacy nodes are removed, including Function, Function Item, Item Lists, Cron, Interval, the legacy OpenAI node, older AI Agent modes, and a long list of loaders and vector-store helpers. Many have direct replacements; some migrate automatically through the report.
n8n's help center FAQ also states that after stable 3.0 ships, 2.x gets security and critical fixes for 12 months, and new features land on 3.x only. Support for 1.x ends December 31, 2026, with no direct path from 1.x to 3.0.
The Migration Report is the real work
Every instance on 2.39 or later has Settings > Migration Report. Update to the latest 2.x first so you get the newest report.
What the report does, per n8n:
- Lists workflows and instance settings affected by 3.0
- Applies many automatic fixes as new workflow versions you can review and publish while published v2 workflows keep running
- Suggests an owner (last editor), lets admins reassign, and can email owners
- Lets you mark stale unpublished workflows as "won't fix"
- Exports a CSV summary
Review both tabs: workflow issues and instance issues. Instance findings can block a clean upgrade even when every workflow looks fine.
Recommended path
- Update to the latest 2.x and open the Migration Report.
- Fix or mark "won't fix" on everything it flags. Review auto-fixed versions before you publish them.
- Take a full backup. Moving to 3.x is one way; rolling back means restoring that backup.
- Upgrade staging first, then production.
Self-hosted: move to Docker before you touch 3.0
If you still run n8n with npm or npx n8n, finish the Docker move on 2.x. n8n documents a one-line setup:
curl -fsSL https://get.n8n.io | sh
Teams already on Docker Compose or Helm stay on that path. The common failure mode is losing the encryption key when the data directory is not mounted correctly. Preserve the full data folder (including config and the SQLite files if you use them), and keep N8N_ENCRYPTION_KEY aligned with what created your credentials.
| Layer | Stay on 2.x until ready | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Install | Docker / Compose / Helm | npm and npx installs cannot move to 3.0 |
| Workflows | Migration Report fixes | Removed nodes fail at runtime and stop triggers |
| Credentials | Keep encryption key | A new key cannot decrypt old credentials |
| Cutover | Staging then production | No in-place rollback to 2.x |
Nodes that usually bite agent stacks
If you run AI agents inside n8n, check the report for these patterns early:
- Legacy Function / Function Item nodes still sitting in old templates (replace with Code)
- Item Lists still used for split/aggregate work (use Split Out, Aggregate, Sort, Limit, Remove Duplicates, or Summarize)
- Cron / Interval triggers (use Schedule Trigger)
- Legacy OpenAI node vs the current OpenAI node in the AI section
- Old AI Agent modes and memory or vector-store helpers that 3.0 removes
- AI Transform nodes that never generated code (the report cannot migrate those; replace by hand)
Published workflows that still contain a removed node will not activate when 3.0 starts, so their triggers go quiet. That is the production outage pattern to avoid.
When to rebuild instead of patch
A Migration Report pass is enough when your workflows are mostly current nodes, credentials are clean, and you already run Docker. Rebuild (or re-architect) when:
- Half the active flows still use legacy Function / Item Lists / Cron patterns
- Agent tools are glued together with removed HTTP Tool or loader nodes
- npm install is how production still boots
- Nobody owns the instance, so the report has no clear fixer per workflow
For agent platforms that need governed tools, multi-tenant data, and WhatsApp or POS actions rather than a single shared canvas, we often land the durable parts in a product like AgentsCreator and keep n8n for the integrations that belong in a workflow engine. That split is covered in more detail in our note on n8n agents vs workflows.
A four-week calendar before early December
Assume stable 3.0 lands in early December. Working backwards from a Gulf weekday cutover:
- This week. Confirm version (Settings > Personal). If you are on 1.x, plan the 2.x move first. If you are on npm, schedule the Docker migration.
- Next week. Clear the Migration Report on staging. Publish reviewed auto-fixes. Run the heaviest agent and webhook flows under load.
- Week three. Production report pass. Full backup. Freeze non-urgent workflow edits for the cutover window.
- Cutover week. Staging on 3.0 beta or first stable build, then production after a short restart window. Watch failed executions and inactive triggers for 48 hours.
n8n Cloud users can opt into 3.0.0 Beta (early access) when changing version. Self-hosted users install the beta like any other early release. Either way, try it on a non-production instance first.
Where we would help
We build and harden n8n stacks for shops that need Arabic/English ops, WhatsApp, and multi-tenant data, not demo canvases. If your Migration Report is a wall of red, or you want agents that call real shop tools instead of chat-only flows, start from our AI integration services or tell us what is running today.
You keep the instance. We clear the report, move you to Docker if needed, and leave you with a staging path you can repeat when 3.1 ships.
